The family fishing tradition

Family recollections alongside distinct newspaper accounts.

A fishing tradition, passed down

Fishing trips were a family tradition that carried from Joe Roling’s generation to Bob’s. Family memories recall Joe taking his children to Bull Shoals Lake and the White River, sometimes joined by Frank Roling, Ben’s son and Johnny’s brother. Bob later took his own children, with stays over many years at Gaston’s Resort and dock and, later, Newlands trout dock in northern Arkansas.

1956 and 1959 · Fishing trips in the newspapers

A November 1956 notice reported that Alvin Monnig, Joe Roling, Frank Roling and Bob Roling had spent a weekend fishing at Bull Shoals Lake in Arkansas and had a successful catch.

A separate notice in May 1959 described a Table Rock-area trip by Alvin Monnig, Joe Roling, Bob Roling, Frank Roling and Maurice Tebbe. It reported their return “last Thursday,” with poor weather early in the week followed by good fishing on Wednesday and Thursday.

These are two distinct newspaper reports. Neither identifies a resort or states the men’s family relationships; the relative day references do not establish exact trip dates.

November 1959 · Deer and fish in southern Missouri. A third, separate notice reported that Joe, Ben and Bob Roling and Al Monnig were getting deer and fish in southern Missouri. It gives no exact trip dates or more specific location, and does not establish that Al is the Alvin Monnig named in the earlier reports.

A week in the Ozarks

Joe Roling also went fishing with friends from Salisbury’s business and professional community. An undated clipping lists him among ten men who left on a Sunday for a week in the Ozarks. His companions included Frank Nagel, Harry Jacobs, Oscar Horton and Elmer Bills. The notice names no particular lake or resort.
