Bange birthdays, visits and weddings

Four connected newspaper accounts, with their dates, source details and unresolved family-count discrepancy retained.

Family gatherings and new households

Jacob Widmer’s birthday gathering

In March 1932, twenty-five people gathered at Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bange’s home east of town to celebrate Jacob Widmer’s eighty-ninth birthday. The newspaper explicitly calls him Mrs. Bange’s father. It does not give her first name or Jacob’s exact birth date. Source: Salisbury Press-Spectator, March 11, 1932, page 4; untitled family notice preserved in the family collection.

Fifty years together

In April 1943, Joseph and Minnie Bange celebrated their golden wedding at home east of Salisbury with more than fifty relatives and friends. The newspaper recalled their marriage at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on April 11, 1893, by Father Gadell. It reported seven children, five still living and all present: Mrs. Joe Roling, Mrs. William Vasser, Frank Bange of Carroll, Iowa, Mrs. Russell Williams and Betty Bange. A separate notice on the same page explicitly calls Evelyn and Jean Roling the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Roling and granddaughters of the Banges.

The anniversary also brought Joseph’s sisters Katherine Sido and Elizabeth McCormick and his brother Frank Bange of Edwardsville, Illinois. That Frank was Joseph’s brother, not his son Frank from Iowa. Source: Salisbury Press-Spectator, April 16, 1943, page 1, “Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bange Honorees at Dinner Last Sunday,” and the separate Evelyn and Jean notice on that page. The marriage details were recalled fifty years later.

An earlier 1905 notice reports that Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bange northeast of Salisbury lost nine-year-old Henry on March 26 and five-year-old Eddie about four weeks earlier. This appears to account for the two children no longer living in 1943, although the notice does not name their mother. The 1910 census instead reported five children born and five living; that difference remains unresolved. Visits and a Christmas dinner

A notice in August 1936 records Betty Bange coming from St. Louis for a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bange. In December 1939, another notice describes Christmas dinner at the Joe Bange home. Guests included the Joe Roling family, William Vassar, Frank Bange of Missouri Valley, Iowa, the Russel Williams household and Betty Bange of St. Louis. The guest list records the gathering without identifying every guest’s relationship to the hosts. Agnes Bange and William Vassar’s wedding

Agnes Bange and William Vassar’s wedding was announced at a New Year’s gathering in 1940, although they had married on May 24, 1939. The newspaper names Agnes as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bange, east of Salisbury, and William as the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Vassar, north of Salisbury. The ceremony took place at St. Joseph’s rectory, with the bride’s mother among the witnesses. William and his father operated a John Deere implement shop in Glasgow, where the couple expected to make their home.
