In November 1915, Ben Roling returned to Salisbury after spending ten days with his uncle and aunt, Henry Roling and his wife, at 928 Madison Street in Quincy. He had enjoyed himself so much that he promised to come back for Christmas. Read the notice in The Quincy Daily Herald, November 9, 1915, page 12.

Visits went both ways. In August 1917, the same paper reported that Lena Roling, also of 928 Madison Street, had returned from three weeks with friends and relatives in Moberly and Salisbury. It did not name the people she visited, but the notice adds another glimpse of the ties between the two communities. Read Lena’s notice, August 24, 1917, page 7.

Celebrations on Madison Street

For Anton Roling’s birthday in 1913, his friends arrived at 928 Madison Street with a surprise party and a catching glove. There was whist and something to eat. At the end of the evening, each guest received a lighted candle from the birthday cake to help find the way home. The Quincy Daily Journal, September 6, 1913, page 8.

Three years later, Lena, Lula and Carrie entertained for their brother Albert H., home from Chicago. The evening included games and a three-course supper. Albert spent a week with his parents before taking the Eli back to Chicago. The Quincy Daily Herald, December 4, 1916, page 10.

Plans for a cousin’s Missouri wedding

In October 1916, Lulu and Carrie Roling left for Salisbury, Missouri, to visit relatives. They also planned to go to Glasgow for the wedding of their cousin, Benjamin Franklin Roling, and Katherine Korte. The Quincy Daily Journal of October 14, 1916 (page 2) said the wedding would take place the following Wednesday morning. This is a glimpse of family travel plans; it does not establish that the ceremony took place.

October 18 is the calculated intended date. The notice supplies no parents for the couple and no children’s parentage; Benjamin Franklin is not automatically equated with the Ben in the 1915 visit notice.

More Quincy gatherings

Lena and Carrie’s community offices

Lena and Carrie Roling appear in a December 1920 account of St. Mary’s Branch W. C. U. Lena was elected vice president and Carrie financial secretary at its annual meeting in St. Mary’s school hall. Members then shared a four-course luncheon in a hall decorated for Christmas. Read the Quincy Daily Herald report, printed December 15, 1920, page 2.

The archive indexes this page as December 16; the printed header says December 15. Identification draws on the earlier family notices: this item gives no Roling home address or relationship. Its separate St. Anthony election concerns other officers.

Caroline’s wedding at St. Mary’s

In October 1921, Caroline Roling and Arthur Schlephorst married at eight o’clock on a Wednesday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Both belonged to the choir, which sang during the ceremony. Lula Roling was maid of honor, and Caroline’s brother Anton was best man. Breakfast for thirty followed at her parents’ home, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Roling, at 928 Madison Street. After a trip to Chicago, the newlyweds planned to live on North Fifth Street. Read the Quincy Daily Herald report, archive-dated October 27, 1921, page 4.

The paper places guests Mr. and Mrs. Frank Roling in “Salisbury, Ill.”; that wording is retained without identifying them automatically as the Salisbury, Missouri couple. Henry’s 1931 obituary uses Anthony Schlepphorst for his daughter’s husband, whereas this report prints Arthur Schlephorst. That discrepancy remains unresolved, and the planned North Fifth Street home is not proof of occupancy.

Anton and Josephine’s early-morning wedding

Anton William Roling and Josephine Paradise married at a six o’clock nuptial Mass at St. Rose Catholic Church on June 26, 1924. His sister Lula Roling and Charles C. Paradise attended them. Anton was office manager at Irwin Paper Company, and Josephine was a file clerk at Gardner Governor Company. After their wedding breakfast, they took the train to St. Louis and planned to settle in an apartment at 701½ State Street on their return. Read the wedding report in The Quincy Daily Herald, June 26, 1924, page 4.

The notice names Anton’s parents as Mr. and Mrs. John H. Roling of 928 Madison Street; that is the name form printed in this source. The State Street apartment was their announced plan, rather than proof of later occupancy.

Cake, cards and music for a birthday

Relatives and friends surprised Mrs. Henry Roling with a party for her sixty-ninth birthday in October 1932. Mrs. Ed Hoffman baked the cake, and Ed Hoffman, Donald Roling and Manny Hoffman won the card prizes. Lena and Lulu Roling, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schlepphorst, and the John and Tony Roling families were among the guests. After refreshments, Ed and Manny provided instrumental and vocal music. The notice does not give Mrs. Henry Roling’s own first name or her exact birthday. Read the Quincy Herald-Whig notice, October 4, 1932, page 4.

An afternoon party for Carlene

In March 1942, Mrs. A. W. Roling and her sisters-in-law Lena and Lula Roling hosted a party at the Plaza for Mrs. Harvey M. Davis, formerly Carlene Schlepphorst. Cards and a two-course luncheon were accompanied by snapdragons and St. Patrick’s decorations; Carlene received a group gift and a corsage of spring flowers. The paper also reported her January 29 marriage in Tullahoma, Tennessee, and said Sergeant Davis was at Camp Forrest. It does not state Carlene’s parents or her exact relationship to the hosts. Read the party report in the Quincy Herald-Whig, March 9, 1942, page 4.

← Roling familyBernard and Magdalena overviewRoling Family line

Home › Roling family › Quincy family gatherings Visits, weddings and celebrations reported in the newspapers.
