Each account keeps its sources and open questions close to the people they concern.

Records, copies and memories

An original record shows what someone wrote down or told the person making the record. It may support a date, relationship or place while leaving other questions unanswered. Different records can disagree.

Indexes and transcriptions make records easier to find and read. They remain identified as indexes or transcriptions, with the original record checked when available. Published histories and family compilations are also attributed to their authors or sources.

One example from the Samuel research is a birth-index entry for Frank Sanul dated December 30, 1916. It matches the birth date reported for a son Frank in the elder Frank’s naturalization petition, but the index names no parents or specific town. This may be the right Frank, but we still need to check the full birth certificate. Sources: New Jersey Geographic Birth Index, Middlesex County, 1915–1919, reel 53, printed page 303, volume 45, page 393 entry; Samuel record analysis and naturalization-packet citation.

Family recollections preserve remembered experiences. They are labeled as recollections so readers can distinguish them from events independently supported by records.

What the evidence labels mean

Documented: the cited evidence supports the stated event or relationship.

Probable: the evidence points toward a connection that still needs proof.

Family recollection: a remembered account, attributed where possible.

Unresolved: a question or difference that remains open.

Following a source through the stories

One record can support several parts of a story. The 1900 Quincy census, for example, is cited for reported immigration, naturalization, marriage duration and family-size information. Reusing that record on more than one page does not provide an additional independent confirmation.

Several employee profiles use the same printed staff photograph caption. The named “Meet the Staff” advertisements are separate items. Source notes identify the item behind each profile and say when its newspaper, issue date or page number is unknown.

Explore the sources alongside the people and families:

Bernard Roling and Magdalena Wentz: the American records and remaining identity questions.

Wester 45: original German parish records and the limits of compiled comparisons.

Bange, Morrison and Kunkel: family records, migration accounts and unresolved connections.

J.F. Each note preserves conflicting dates and names and distinguishes possible connections from established family relationships.

Follow the records through the four connected branches:

Samuel / Samul sources: naturalization records, censuses and family-held memorial cards, with separate accounts of the elder Frank, Sophie / Teofila and the younger Frank.

Wistuba sources: William and Mary’s census household and the records behind Viola Wistuba Samuel’s account, including the 1940 wedding report.

Rudy sources: marriage-index evidence, censuses and original obituaries, with separate accounts of Joseph S. Their differing birth dates for Frank and birth-month conflict for Viola remain open. We report dates as they appear on each memorial card. If a date has no label, we do not assume it is the date of death or the funeral.

Photographs, maps and differing accounts

Photo captions explain when an identification or date comes from writing on the photograph, an accompanying note or a family identification. Unverified dates and places remain qualified. Source identification and permission to display an image are considered separately.

Maps provide geographic orientation. They do not establish a historical home, property boundary or route traveled.

When sources disagree, their dates and name forms stay attached to the sources that supply them. Similar names alone do not establish that two records describe the same person. Corrections are checked against the evidence rather than silently choosing the more convenient account.

Back to the Roling family branches · Back to Francine’s family overview

Family albums · Francine’s family overview This family history brings together records, photographs, family papers and remembered stories.
